aerial photograph of Denbigh Castle North Wales. Built by Edward I on the site of a previous Welsh Castle , construction started in 1282. Along side the Castle a planned town was laid out for English settlers. It was designed by James of Saint George who also designed Conwy, Harlech, Caernarfon and Beaumaris. The partially completed castle was captured by Madog ap Llywelyn during the Welsh revolt of 1294Ð95. The castle was recaptured by the English in 1295 and construction completed. In 1400 the Castle held out against attacks by Owain Glyndwr and in the 15th century during the wars of the roses the castle twice held out against attacks by Yorkists. The castle finally succumbed during the English Civil war. Royalists held out for 6 months but the castle was taken by Parliamentarian forces in 1645 following which it was slighted. The castle was abandoned after 1660 leaving the ruin we see today.
