aerial photograph of Ruthin Gaol North Wales. Ruthin Gaol ( jail ) was built in 1775 to replace a 17th century prison on the same site. In 1878 it was extended and renamed HM Prison Ruthin. It was used as a prison until 1916 and is now open as a museum. Only one prisoner was executed at the jail, William Hughes of Denbigh who murdered his wife and was hanged.
