aerial photograph of Martinhoe Roman Fortlet in Devon UK. Built to guard the north Devon coast, it would have had a timber fortlet with only the earthworks remaining today. Fortlets are relatively rare in Britain with only around 50 examples known, with 25 of those being in Scotland. It was constructed around the middle of the first century AD under the Emperor Claudius and was in use for a relatively short period of time. It was probably home to a Roman century, which despite the name consisted of around 65 to 80 auxiliary troops.
