aerial photograph of Beeston Castle Cheshire England UK. Built in the 13th Century by the Earl of Chester when he got back from the Crusades. It was maintained until the 16th Century when it fell into disuse although it was briefly reactivated for the English Civil War in 1643. It was initially held by the parliamentarians but was taken by Royalists who held it until finally surrendering in 1645. At the end of the war it was slighted as was the norm with most castles that were no longer needed by the government.
