aerial photograph of Drop Redoubt, Dover Western Heights Kent England UK. The Harbour area at Dover is overlooked by high ground and military engineers have used this high ground for defensive purposes for centuries. The first fortifications on the Western Heights were built in 1779 in response to a threatened Franco-Spanish naval Armada of 1779. These defenses were rebuilt in 1804 in response to the threat of invasion from Napoleon. The main defenses are the Citadel at the western end built in 1780 and Drop Redoubt at the eastern end built 1804-8 and 1859-64. The defenses were further improved at various times during the 19th century and then again during both the first and second world wars . During the later searchlights were positioned here, manned by the Dover Anti-Aircraft Corps. Drop Redoubt was used by the military up until 1945. Since then much of the Western Heights has become a nature reserve with Drop Redoubt preserved as a museum which is open to the public.

The easiest way to navigate this gallery is using the geographic menu on the left. The aerial photographs are all organised in galleries according to their location so start with the county and then choose the town or village. Wales & Scotland are at the bottom under the English Counties. If your looking at a picture and are not sure where it is, click the arrow on the upper right and it will show you which album it is in. Click the album name to see nearby images. There is a search facility ( bottom left ) but this only works with words I have put into it. That's fine for searches of places or well known buildings but in most cases I have not entered a post code. The gallery is only a small part of my collection of UK aerial photographs so please Email if you would like to buy an aerial view of something not in the gallery. There are over 25,000 photos in the gallery and I have an archive of around half a million pictures going back to 1999. As well as the views in my gallery, we can take new photographs specially to order, just email me for a quote.
