aerial photograph of Cranmore Castle iron age hill fort Tiverton Devon England UK. Cranmore Castle is an unusually large univallate hill fort constructed in the iron age between 400BC and 100 AD.The site is overlooking the confluence of the River Lowman and River Exe. The site also has an excellent view over the town of Tiverton and for this reason artillery was sited here during the English Civil War when Parliamentarian troops attacked the Royalist Garrison at Tiverton Castle. The site was also the scene of a battle in 1549 during the "Prayer Book Rebellion" which was a rebellion against the introduction of the Book of Common Prayer which was very unpoppular , especially in Devon and Cornwall.
