aerial photograph of Padstow Battery, Gun Point, Padstow Cornwall England UK. Padstow Emergency Coastal Battery was built during World War II on the site of a 19th century Napoleonic battery. The earlier battery was built in 1858 although parts of it date back even before 1780. With the silting up of the River Camel Estuary the navel threat diminished and the battery was abandoned it the beginning of the 20th century only to be rebuilt during the second world war. the image shows the observation post which is the only surviving significant structure. Nearby were originally two 4 inch guns which were replaced with 138mm French Naval guns in 1942. With the threat of invasion receding the Battery was put on a care and maintenance basis from 1943.
