Aerial photograph of Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh Scotland UK. The Palace of Holyroodhouse as it is more correctly known is the official residence of the Scottish Moarch, a role it has served for 400 years. Most of the Palace was constructed 1671 to 1678 with the north-west tower dating from the 15th century. Adjacent the Palace are the remains of Holyrood Abbey.Holyrood Abbey was founded by King David I, King of Scotland, in 1128. The Eastern part of the Abbey was demolished in 1570, however the remaining part was used as a parish church up to the 17th century after Following a roof collapse in the 18th century the building was left as a ruin.
