aerial photograph of Pembroke College, Oxford University England UK. Pembroke College was founded by James I in 1624 and is part of Oxford University. In the centre of the photo is the Old Quad which was built in the 17th century. Part of it was constructed over the old city wall. The adjacent Chapel quad was added in 1846, built around the earlier chapel constructed in 1732. J. R. R. Tolkien was a Fellow of Pembroke from 1925 to 1945, and it was during his time here that he wrote The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
