The Fosse Way linked the Roman towns of Exeter (Isca Dumnoniorum), Ilchester (Lindinis), Bath (Aquae Sulis), Cirencester (Corinium) Leicester (Ratae Corieltauvorum) and Lincoln (Lindum Colonia). The name comes from the Latin word for ditch, Fossa and it is possible that it was first constructed as a defensive ditch as for some time after the Roman Invasion the Fosse Way represented the boundary between Roman and Celtic Britain. Only after several decades was the rest of England and Wales brought under Roman rule.
