aerial photograph of Roman Barrow at Thornborough Buckinghamshire England UK. Originally conical in shape this barrow near Thornborough is very well preserved and dates from the Roman period. They were usually used for the burial of the cremated remains of high-ranking people. Roman barrows are relatively rare with only 150 or so known in England. There was a fashion for barrow building in early part of the second century AD, but the trend seems to have died out by the end of that century. The Thornborough Mounds were excavated in 1839 which uncovered various grave goods dating from the first and second centuries and the cremated remains of the deceased in a ceramic jar.
