Richmond Castle was built in 1071 shortly after the Norman Conquest and immediatly after "the Harrying of the North" when native Brtains were ethnically cleansed from much of Yorkshire . The castle was altered and improved throughout the medieval period but was derelict by the 16th century. The castle keep , which was built in the 12th century, is one of the best preserved in England. The castle is a scheduled ancient monument and cared for by English Heritage.
