aerial photograph of the Caspar apartments 55 North Street, Leeds LS2 7DH. CASPAR stands for " city-centre apartments for single people at affordable rents ". The building is a development of 46 flats built 1999-2000 by Kajima of Japan, for landlords the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust. The building made newspaper headlines when engineers discovered construction errors could cause the building to collapse forcing it to be evacuated. The £2.4M building was constructed off site with prefabricated units and then assembled on site. Unconfrimed internet reports suggest they were assembled in the wrong order with the bottom floor on the top and the top floor on the bottom. The problem is so serious that the building cannot be saved and must be demolished and rebuilt.
