The Beetham Tower is a 47-storey, 169m tower designed by SimpsonHaugh and Partners ( previously Ian Simpson Architects) . The Skyscraper is mixed us and incorporates both residential apartments and the Manchester Hilton Hotel. The top floor is occupied by the architect and is the highest residential space in Europe. Until recently Manchester City Council had not been keen on skyscrapers. Sunlight House built in 1932 was originally intended to be Manchester's first skyscraper at 40 storeys, however the Council limited it to 14. Manchester didn't start building skyscrapers until the CIS tower in 1963 , but at 118 m it is dwarfed by the Beetham tower. At 169m Beetham Tower was the tallest building in Manchester until overtaken by Deansgate Square in 2018.
