aerial photograph of Tilbury Fort England UK. Tilbury Fort was originally constructed as a small artillery fort by Henry VIII in the 16th century. It was repeatedly enlarged and improved since then, notably during the English Civil War and the Anglo-Dutch Wars of the 17th Century when the fort was given its distinctive star-shaped defensive work designed by Sir Bernard de Gomme. The fort was again updated during the 19th century but by the 20th century it was outdated and used as a military storage depot.
