aerial photograph of The Bullring shopping centre Birmingham , West Midlands England UK. The area gets its name from bull-baiting which was carried on at the site before such practices were made illegal with the Cruelty to Animals Act of 1835. The area has a trading history going back to 1154 when Henry II granted a Charter of Marketing Rights. The shopping centre was built in 2003 to a design by Benoy and replaced the previous brutalist structure built in 1964. On its opening day it was visited by more than a quarter of a million shoppers. The Selfridges Building on the right of the photo has won numerous awards including the RIBA Award for Architecture 2004 and was designed by Future Systems.
