aerial photograph of St Albans Cathedral Hertfordshire England UK. St Albans Cathedral is a Norman Cathedral which was originally constructed as an Abbey. The Abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1539 but rather than being demolished, it was allowed to continue in use as a parish church. The building narrowly escaped plans to demolish it in the 18th century and parts were altered in a Victorian make over, however a considerable amount of the medieval architecture survives.
