aerial photograph of Caverswall Castle Caverswall Staffordshire England UK. Grade I listed Caverswall Castle can trace its origins back to the medieval period when in 1275 the Caverswall family were granted licence to crenellate ( permission from the King to build a fortified property ). By the 17th century the castle was in poor condition but it was still garrisoned by Parliamentarian forces during the English Civil War. In 1615 the Mayor of Stafford, Matthew Cradock, bought the castle and built the house within its walls which remains to this day. The Castle is privately owned and not open to the public.
