Ribchester Roman Fort was first constructed as as a simple wooden fort in AD72 which was rebuilt in stone in the 2dn Century AD. The fort was garrisoned by Sarmatian auxiliaries who originated from Sarmatia which covered large parts of what is today Ukraine and Southern Russia. The fort was used throughout the Roman Occupation until the Roman withdrawal in the 4th Century AD, after which it was abandoned. In the 13th Century St Wilfrid's Church was built on the site of the fort. The fort was subject of an episode of the hugely popular TV archaeology program Tine Team in 1994.
