Originally founded as a Cistercian Abbey in 1270 by Edward I the Abbey was disolved by Henry VIII in 1538.After the dissolution much of the Abbey was demolished, however significant parts survived and were incorporated into a mansion house built on the site. Although this house has been modified over the years, much of the Tudor structure and preceeding Abbey survive to this day. The Building is Grade II listed. Today the surrounding parkland forms Vale Royal Abbey Golf Club with a course laid out by Simon Gidman in 1998.
