Dunford Bridge railway station was opened in 1845 and served the Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester Railway which ran through the adjacent Woodhead Tunnels. The line closed to passenger services in 1970, although freight continued to run along the lines until 1981. The Tunnels are still maintained and are used for electricty cables as part of the National Grid.
