The Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester Railway was opened in 1845 and served the cross Pennines route between Sheffield and Ashton-under-Lyne running through the Woodhead Tunnels. The line closed to passenger services in 1970, although freight continued to run along the lines until 1981. The Tunnels are still maintained and are used for electricty cables as part of the National Grid with the power lines running along the route of the old railway.
