aerial photograph of Auckland Castle Bishop Auckland aka Auckland Palace. Grade I listed Auckland Castle was established as a manor house in 1183. The castle was used as the residence of the bishops of Durham and during the 13th century was converted to a castle. The castle has been much altered over the centuries with much of what we see today dating from the 18th and 19th centuries.
