aerial photograph of Stone Street near Canterbury following the course of the old Roman road through Kent England UK. Stone Street runs from Canterbury to the Roman harbour of Portus Limanis ( Lympne ). Typical of Roman roads it runs straight as a die across the Kent landscape. The word street is actually a description of a Roman road. When the Anglo- Saxons encountered them, the didnt know much of thier origins and simply referred to them as straights. In Beowulf it was written as strǣt and over time this has become the modern word street. Other languages follow suit with the German Straße , Dutch Straat and Spanish estrada all having their origins in the Latin phrase via strata which means straight way.
