aerial photograph of Euston railway station London UK. Euston station opened in 1837 as the terminus of the London and Birmingham Railway (L&BR), the first such intercity terminus in London. It was planned by George and Robert Stephenson with a station design by designed by Philip Hardwick. After the merger of the railways the station was operated by the London and North Western Railway ( LNWR ) 1846–1923, then the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) from 1923 until nationalisation in 1948. There were already plans to rebuild the station in the 1930s but these were delayed by the war. Rebuilding eventually got underway in the 1960s. Unfortunately this involved the demolition of the Station Entrance , known as the Euston arch, still lamented by classical architecture lovers to this day. The resultant building is as you see today, functional rather than beautiful, however it certainly functions as it is now the 5th busiest railway station in Britain.
