aerial photograph of Alexandra Palace Haringey London England UK. Alexandra Palace opened in 1873 and was designed by John Johnson and Alfred Meeson. From 1936 the BBC used Alexandra Palace as a television transmission centre beginning Britain's first television service from here. The 1930s studios still survive although they are no longer used for broadcasts. The transmission aerial is still in use for Radio services. The building was badly damaged by a fire in 1980 but subsequently rebuilt.
