aerial photograph of Poplar Docklands Light Railway (DLR) station London England UK. Poplar DLR station was opened in 1987 as part of the Docklands Light Railway. Poplar station is the busiest on the DLR as it is an interchange between 3 DLR lines: Bank-Woolwich Arsenal , Stratford-Canary Wharf and Tower Gateway-Beckton. The trains run fully automatically just like a giant model train set. When it opened there were a few teething problems within the first 5 years of operation but since then it has proved a model of reliability and is extremely popular with passengers, of which it carries more than 100 million per year. The automated railway has proved very safe with only two significant accidents, both of which involved trains driven by human drivers. There are now plans to extend the system to other parts of London.
