aerial photograph of the Isle of Dogs, London England UK. The Isle of Dogs used to be part of the busiest port in the world, however by the end of the 20th century containerisation of the shipping industry and larger ships meant that the docks were no longer needed and had become run down. It was decided by the government to remodel the area as a new commercial and residential centre to be known as London Docklands. There is no consensus on how the The Isle of Dogs got its name. It was first recorded in the written record in the ‘Letters & Papers of Henry VIII from 1519–1523. One possible explanation is that Edward III kept Greyhounds on the Peninsular.
