The former ICI works at Winnington and Wallerscote originally opened in 1873 as Brunner, Mond & Co. Ltd the site produced Soda Ash. It was here that Polythene was invented in 1933 quite by accident. The site had various owners until it finally closed in 2014 and now houses are being built on the site.
