aerial photograph of St Chad's Church, Rochdale Lancashire. Grade II listed St Chads Parish Church dates from the 13th century with alterations and additions in the 14th, 16th and 19th centuries. It is quite likely the origins are much older. The first written record of a church on the site dates from AD 1194 and the fact that the church is dedicated to St Chad could even indicate it dates from the Dark Ages when St Chad was alive. He died in AD 672 so it is possible there was a Saxon Church here at that time. In 1970 the Gravestones were rearranged as paving stones and the graveyard laid to lawn. It is believed that the graveyard contains the remains of over 5000 people including 500 from the plague of 1623.
