aerial photograph of Eccleshall Castle Staffordshire England UK. Grade I listed Eccleshall Castle was originally constructed in the 13th century after King John granted a licence to crenellate in AD 1200. The castle was rebuilt on a larger scale in the 14th century. During the English Civil War the Castle was held by Royalist Forces and besieged by the Parliamentarians. The Castle suffered significant damage and held out for a considerable time before eventually falling to the Parliamentarians who slighted it and then used the remains as a prison. In 1693 a mansion house was built within the Castle walls which stands to this day and retains the 14th century bridge seen in the photograph. The Castle is Grade II listed and a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
