aerial photograph of Eastbourne Redoubt , Eastbourne East Sussex England UK .Eastbourne Redoubt was built in 1805 to defend against an invasion by French forces under NapolŽon Bonaparte. It was one of many coastal defence forts built along the south coast and they proved such a deterrent that Napoleon never attempted to invade. The fort was originally armed with 11 canon but the armament was upgraded a number of times during the 19th century. During the First World war the fort was used by the military police and during the Second World War it housed an anti aircraft battery. Today the fort is preserved as a museum and open to the public.
