Surrounded by modern buildings , Old Eldon Square is a tranquil oasis of traditional architecture in the middle of Newcastle city centre. The Square was built 1825 to 1840 and designed by John Dobson . In the centre of the square is the war memorial unveiled in 1923 by Earl Haig designed by Charles Leonard Hartwell. The memorial is surmounted by a statue of Saint George. Originally there were 3 terraces around the square but 2 were demolished to make way for 1960s developments on the site. The remaining terrace is protected by Grade II listing.
