aerial photograph of Chirk castle Wales. Chirk Castle was built in 1295 as one of Edward I's Iron ring of fortresses surrounding North Wales following the defeat of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd ( Llywelyn the last ) in 1282. In 1563,Elizabeth I granted the castle to Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester. During the English civil war the castle was captured by Royalists in 1643. In 1659 the castle was besieged and badly damaged by Parliamentarian forces. The castle was renovated and altered throughout the 18th and 19th centuries including a new interior by A.W. Pugin. The castle was owned by one family, the Myddelton from 1595 until it was passed to the national trust in 1978.
