Dinas Bran was originally built as a fort in the Iron Age around 600 bc, it was later rebuilt in wood which burnt down , finishing with the construction of the medieval castle we see today in the 13th century by Gruffydd II ap Madog. In 1276 the castle was burnt and abandoned by its garrison in the face of the advancing forces of Edward Longshanks who occupied and repaired the castle. After the death of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd in 1282 the Castle was given to John de Warenne, 6th Earl of Surrey who abandoned it in favor of a new castle at Holt.
