aerial photograph of Fort Belan , Gwynedd, North Wales. The fort was constructed in 1775 by Thomas Wynn the local MP who was worried about the possibility of an attack related to the American War of Independence which was ongoing at the time. The Fort was the only American Revolution fort built on the European side of the Atlantic and cost £30,000 to build. During the second world war the local Home Guard were based here. The building is Grade I listed although this doesn't seem to have prevented the demolition of half the western defencive wall in recent years.
