aerial photograph of Swaythorpe deserted medieval village DMV in Yorkshire England UK. The circular crop mark immediately North West ( left centre in the photo ) is believed to be prehistoric in origin. Swaythorpe medieval settlement was first mentioned in the Doomsday Book written in 1087 when it held land ploughed by 9 plough teams.After the Normal Conquest William the Conqueror gave the village to his military technician Odo Arblaster. The village was quite small and the Poll Tax of 1377 listed only only 48 people over the age of 14. Its not known when the village was deserted but by 1621 it was recorded simply as sheep pasture. The village was centered around the village pond called Hemp Dyke which still shows clearly from the air.To the right of the pond is a large enclosure which was originally the manor house.The separate pond in the adjacent field is the Chapel Well
