aerial photograph of Wallerthwaite Deserted medieval village (DMV ) It is not known for sure why Wallerthwaite became deserted but it is known it was abandoned by the end of the 14th century and its probable that it was wiped out by the Black Death of 1349.Today all that remains are the remnants of yards and enclosures plus the platforms that the houses were built on.A little bit of ridge and furrow can be seen in the top left. The site has been a scheduled ancient monument since 1958.
