The settlement of Margidvnvm was protected by was protected by an extensive system of six ditches to defend against the hostile natives. The inner buildings were originally of timber construction but these were replaced with stone following damage by fire, probably related the Boudiccan insurrection in A.D. 61. Nothing of Margidvnvm remains visible on the surface but the site was excavated in 1927 and extensive remains uncovered.
