aerial photograph of Eglwys Cross Motte Wrexham Wales, aka Mount Cop Castle. Most likely Norman in origin, Mottes were a turf and earth mound which had a fortified tower or keep on top of them. Immediately after the Normal conquest the Normans had difficulty with the natives rebelling against their new European rulers in various parts of the country and so large numbers of Motte and Bailey Castles were constructed as quickly as possible in order to secure their conquest. these were typically initially built of timber although many were later rebuilt in stone. They were typically encircled by an enclosure known as a bailey. There was a bailey at Eglwys Cross Motte but only faint traces of it are visible now.
