aerial photograph of the Roman Pharos at Dover Kent England UK. The Pharos at Dover was a lighthouse built by the Romans at Dover in AD 46 under the Emperor Claudius, shortly after the Roman conquest of Britain. It was one of a pair with the other one being situated on the Western Heights. Only a small amount of masonry from the western lighthouse remains but the eastern lighthouse is preserved in remarkable condition. Its probably the oldest near complete building in Britain with 3 from 4 floors being Roman in origin. Its owes its survival due to being incorporated into St Mary's church within the castle.
