Brinklow Castle was originally a prehistoric burial barrow which was turned into a Norman Motte & Bailey castle William the Conqueror's northern campaigns in 1069. The Motte is remarkably well preserved and still stands 12m high. the site was chosen as a commanding position overlooking the Fosse Way Roman road which was still in use in the medieval period. The area on the left of the photograph shows well preserved medieval ridge and furrow field patterns.
