During the Roman Period Cirencester, or Corinium Dobunnorum as it was known as then, was the second largest city in Britain with only Londinium being larger. The Amphitheatre could seat around 8000 people. At the end of the Roman Period in the 4th century, the stadium was turned into a defensive structure, probably to fend off attacks by maraudng Saxons.
