The Abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1538 and the ruins are now in the care of English Heritage. In its day it was one of the finest Abbeys in England and was home to 140 monks and 500 lay brothers. The monastic lands extended to over 6,000 acres and activities ranged from sheep farming to mining.
