aerial photograph of the A41 / A49 Watling Street Roman Road running through Whitchurch Shropshire. Whitchurch was established by the Romans on the the road between Londinium ( London) and Deva Victrix ( Chester ). The town was the site of a Roman fort built around AD 52, together with its associated vicus. During the Roman period the town , then known as Mediolanum, ceased to be of military importance and the vicus grew over the fort. Today Whitchurch is the only town in Shropshire still on a Roman site.
