Grade 1 listed St John the Baptist's Church was founded by King Aethelred in AD 689 and was the original Chester Cathedral until the Abbey Church gained that role following the dissolution of the monasteries following which St John the Baptist's was used as the parish church. The church was occupied by Parliamentarian forces and used as a gun platform during the English Civil war. The church was partially rebuilt during the Victorian period.
