aerial photograph shwoing the end of the Lancaster Canal at Tewitfield near Carnforth Lancashire UK. The Lancaster Canal was completed in 1826 and originally intended to run from Westhoughton to Kendal, however the River Ribble crossing was never completed so the southern sections of the canal were integrated with the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Commercial traffic ceased in 1947 and the canal offically closed in 1955. The construction of the M6 Motorway in 1965 severed the canal at several places and it is now only navigable to the section shown in the photograph at Tewitfield. It is hoped that the Northern section can be reopened in the future.
