aerial photograph of Shrewsbury Castle Shropshire. Grade I listed Shrewsbury Castle was built by William the Conqueror in 1067 and was regularly improved throughout the medieval period. The Castle was besieged and taken by King Stephen in 1138 and then again by Llywelyn Fawr in 1215. From the 13th century the castle was primarily used for residential purposes rather than military although it was again garrisoned by Royalist Forces during the English Civil War before being captured by Parliamentarian troops.
