aerial photograph of Skelmore Heads univallate Bronze Age / Iron Age Hillfort near Great Urswick Cumbria England UK. occupying a natural defensive position the hill fort only needed a ditch on the northern side which was traversed by a causeway with a 2m wide entrance. Excavations have revealed evidence of a palisaded defences. Bronze Age pottery has also been found and to the north of the site lies Great Urswick Long Barrow which dates from the Neolithic period. There is no evidence of occupation after the 5th century AD, although as is often said, absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.
