aerial photograph of curious ditch west of Hornby Lancashire England UK. Just next to the modern village of Hornby are traces of a large circular ditch. After much searching I have not found anything to say what this is. You can see part of the circular ditch on the right of the photo and then on the left in the ploughed field you can see the faint trace of its outline in a lighter colour. The whole makes up roughly a circle with what could be an entrance so the shape is a bit like an apple. The formation also shows on satellite photos. To me it looks a lot like an Iron Age enclosure, however its much larger than the norm. Given the presence of the River it may well be a natural formation such as a previous course of the River Wenning. The only way to find out is to dig it and see. We need a return of the much missed Time Team. If any viewers know anything about this ditch please get in touch and I will update this page.
